Broaden your mind ... Broaden your world
I am not erudite enough to be interdisciplinary, but I can break rules.
By broad definition, Interdisciplinary Studies encompasses those endeavors that serve to explore how the natural, artificial, and cultural dimensions of our world "fit together." Through the process of inquiry, interdisciplinarians draw on multiple disciplines in an attempt to integrate and synthesize traditional and often incongruent discourses to define various aspects of creation and the human condition. Such a process draws upon well-established expertise, yet it reconsiders typical definitions of the "expert," suggesting that truth may be constructed and viewed through a multitude of perspectives, which include legitimate, yet often marginalized voices.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Virginia Tech encourages its students to explore the complexities of our contemporary world and examine those from times past through comprehensive programmatic curricula, which emphasize
- paths of critical and divergent inquiry
- diverse and integrative research methodologies
- service learning, outreach, and community engagement
- collaboration and exploration among traditional academic disciplines
- concepts of social justice through lenses of diversity and difference
