Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tennessee.
Stevan R. Jackson's teaching areas at Virginia Tech include Appalachian Studies; Ethnomusicology (jazz and Appalachian music specifically); and Sociology. His research interests currently are in ethnomusicology; particular the juxtaposition of politics, culture and the arts. He has published numerous articles on Appalachian studies, Celtic studies, and ethnomusicology. Stevan’s book, Tartan and Strings: ethnography of a musical culture was published in 2004 and he edited Summer Without Children: An oral history of Wythe County, Virginia’s 1950 Polio Epidemic, which was published in 2005. In addition to teaching, Stevan is a professional performing musicianin the jazz, folk, and classical genres.
