Overview of the IDST Internship Program

A working definition of an internship appears in the Career Services Summer Jobs and Internship Handbook:

An internship tends to be project- and career-oriented. Many employers develop formal intern programs with specific short-term goals in mind. These opportunities are typically designed to give the intern a quality experience within a specialized area with either existing or new programs, projects, or activities. Employers also view the intern program as a recruitment tool, providing them with an opportunity to identify potential permanent employees. (p. 2)

Additionally, internship experiences allow qualified students to explore career options, integrate classroom knowledge with practical experience, and develop academic and personal autonomy.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies offers credit for two distinct types of internships:

  • General Internships allow for practical, on-the-job experiences in a variety of workplaces. The general internship, while it is recommended as an important part of a student's undergraduate experience, is not a requirement for the IDST major. Students who decide to participate in a general internship will find their own internship location.
  • PK-6 Internships, which are designed specifically for those students who are pursuing a minor in Pk-6 education fields, are a requirement mandated as a part of the PK-6 undergraduate curriculum. PK-6 minors who complete the required paperwork will be placed in area schools through the School of Education.
